Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Where do you teach?

I am based in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire and teach mainly from my home because all my equipment is set up and ready to go. However, I can also travel to the student's home if they live in the local area, provided they have a quiet room and a CD player! I will travel within a 5 mile radius without extra charge, but would have to charge a nominal mileage fee if needed further away.

  2. How long are teaching sessions, and what is the cost? What can I expect at my first lesson?

Teaching sessions are generally an hour in length and it is recommended that students attend at least once a week. I charge £15 for a first session and £20 thereafter.

Half hour lessons may be a possibility for very regular students at £12.50 per session, but can only be conducted from my home.

Please see the Teaching Philosophy section of the site for a brief lesson plan.

  3. What do I need to bring with me to lessons?

    Nothing except your voice!

I use backing tracks for practice so that I can act as the 'audience' and pay full attention to the student's performance. I have a good catalogue of backing tracks for students to practice with, but you may bring your own track on CD if you wish to work on something I may not have!

If you attend lessons at my home, it is also possible for me to set up a microphone and stand to improve live technique. I will also have plenty of water on hand!

  4. What type of students do you teach?

I am looking ideally for students aged 12 and upwards who know the basics of singing (at least roughly!) in tune but who want or need to improve their vocal performance skills and technique. My style of teaching is firmly in the rock/pop/R&B vein rather than ‘classical’ (see Teaching philosophy). I can also teach harmonies for those who are more advanced.

  5. Do you teach male students?

Yes, gents can be divas too!

  6. Are there opportunities for accredited examinations?

I am currently pursuing the Trinity Examinations Board Rockschool exams (see www.rockschool.co.uk for more details on the rock vocal syllabus) and can help students prepare for Grades 1 to 8 if they would like to pursue them.
